Does it make a difference whether my electric guitar has single coil or humbucker pickups?
It will matter most depending on the type of music that you are playing. If you are requiring a lot of distortion as required for Metal or Hard Rock, it would be best to have humbucker pickups as they cancel out a lot of the background noise that you would get with a single coil. Single coils are very dynamic and expressive and are best suited for low to mid gain and offer incredible clarity for clean tones.
Does string gauge matter?
There is a misconception that heavier string gauge means better tone for your electric guitar, but this is simply not the case. String gauge is more about comfort and suiting the playing style of the individual. Some play guitar with a very heavy hand and easily bend strings out of tune and therefore need heavier gauge strings. Some players have a light touch on the strings and would be more comfortable using lighter gauge strings. Either way, guitar strings sound quite similar regardless of string gauge.
Does the type of wood on an electric guitar make a big difference to the tone?
Different types of wood will make slight differences in tone to an electric guitar but the majority of your tone will come from the pickups in the guitar, rather than the wood. The pickups are what makes it possible to amplify the guitar so therefore have the greatest influence on your tone.
